I'd recommend contacting John Jordan (no relation), he is the new FFF appointee to the Glen Canyon AMWG...he'll have all the latest. His email address is: jcjordan1@cox.net

Let me know what you hear.

Best,
WillWill Jordanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06679946752061021543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439150239233085035.post-9543418970780708062010-10-18T23:39:15.435-06:002010-10-18T23:39:15.435-06:00Hi- Are there any updates on the status of the tro...Hi- Are there any updates on the status of the trout reduction project in BA? anyone we can call or write to for updates & commentary? The creek has had a few years to recover from the last round of trout reduction efforts, and while still a shadow of its former self, it has improved greatly.

Iain,
I know that you can relate to my interest in this issue, since you too have experienced the fishery. You certainly make an interesting point regarding the eradication of trout from other famous tailwaters throught the West. I think that the National Park factor is a key element in this whole situation though.

Troutbirder,
I too wish you could have visited the canyon some years ago. Of course it's NEVER too late...what with the options of riding mules or rafts into the heart of the canyon. I truly wish that more people could experience the depths of the canyon and its trout fishery. For better or worse its ruggedness is an extremely limiting factor for most people. The obscurity of the trout fishery doesn't do it any favors. Were a similar scenario to befall the tailwater fisheries of the San Juan or Green, I'm sure the uproar from the angling community would be magnified greatly. Of course should this project wind up encroaching upon the Lee's Ferry fishery, it should draw plenty of attention.

WillWill Jordanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06679946752061021543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439150239233085035.post-59146255100679031452010-07-17T12:56:08.259-06:002010-07-17T12:56:08.259-06:00Wish I had been there some decades ago when I coul...Wish I had been there some decades ago when I could still climb up mts. and down canyons flyrod in hand. :) It's definitely a complex dilemna.troutbirderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14087811292280881959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439150239233085035.post-5988382042620280242010-07-11T18:18:16.553-06:002010-07-11T18:18:16.553-06:00Hey Will,
I appreciate the attention you give to...Hey Will,

I appreciate the attention you give to this issue, and I feel incredibly discouraged that the NPS intends to continue with their efforts to destroy some of the finest wild trout fisheries in the state. The project makes no sense in the larger scope of native fisheries conservation, as you noted above, because it does not deal with the true limiting factor for HBCs (not to mention Colorado Pikeminnows, Razorback Suckers, etc.), namely, the alteration of the ecology of the Colorado River. The project strikes me as wasteful and irresponsible, both from ecological and economic standpoints.

By the way, I admire Ted Williams' writing as well, but in this case, I wonder if he would be in support of eradicating trout in some of the famous tailwaters throughout the West, in the name of native fisheries, even though a sound long-term plan for recovering those native species was not in place, and the tailwaters would remain in their present form. That proposal of course doesn't make a lot of sense...and neither does the trout reduction effort in GC.

IainIain Emmonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02113543475780380349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439150239233085035.post-25747327127223068962010-07-11T07:14:36.000-06:002010-07-11T07:14:36.000-06:00Sad situation. Bright Angel is definitely on my list of places to fish and with all the wonderful things you hear about the whole system at the bottom of the Canyon, the mindset the NPS and others have taken is unfathomable. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter.

BenAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
